A white man from Ohio has been found guilty of fatally shooting two teenagers he discovered smoking marijuana inside a vehicle in his garage.
Victor Santana, 65, of Dayton, Ohio, was convicted of murder and felonious assault on Thursday and will be sentenced later this month.
When Santana discovered the two 17-year-olds inside his detached garage late at night in August 2019, authorities said he shot them. He wanted to utilize the state’s new “stand your ground” argument, but a court said it couldn’t be applied retroactively to the deaths of Devin Henderson and Javier Harrison earlier this year.
Santana saw them walk through his front gate and was scared they were going to break into his house, so he got his rifle and went outside to find them, according to his attorney, Lucas Wilder.
During the trial, Wilder stated that Santana had no idea if they had weapons or were planning to assault him.
Even though it seems justice has been served, it is still heartbreaking that the parents and friends of the two teenagers would never see them again. It is pathetic the rate at which the black community in America loses young boys and girls, to careless shootings by white cops and overzealous or hateful white civilians.
It is Devin Henderson and Javier Harrison today. Who would it be tomorrow?
When will the hate and killings stop? When will black people ever feel safe in a country they built with their sweat and blood?
