Slave owners, according to Larry Elder, are likewise entitled to compensation because their “property” was “taken away” from them during the Civil War. The Black conservative, who is running for governor of California, made the remarks on Candace Owens’ “The Candace Owens Show” on July 18.
“Did you realize that slave owners received compensation? The government paid slave owners once they lost their quote-on-quote “property,” Elder told Owens.
“So, do people really want to talk about reparations when they talk about it? Slavery was legal, whether you liked it or not. Their legal property was taken away from them after the Civil War, so you might argue that those owed reparations aren’t simply Black people, but also those whose quote ‘property’ was taken away after the Civil War ended,” he continued.
After Owens argued that the United States was one of the first countries to prohibit the slave trade, the two conservative hosts got into a discussion about reparations.
According to Reuters, Denmark was the first country to prohibit the importing of slaves in 1803, followed by the United Kingdom in 1807 and the United States in 1808. The United States was likewise one of the last countries to abolish slavery, with Cuba and Brazil coming in second and third, respectively.
Elder went on to say that the British government compensated former slave owners with “huge sums of money,” preventing a civil war in a country like the one that erupted in the United States. According to the Centre for the Study of British Slavery Legacies, after slavery was abolished, the British government distributed £20 million in compensation to former slave owners.
American slave owners in Washington, D.C. were also compensated. Former slave owners in the District of Columbia were given roughly $300 per enslaved person when President Abraham Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act in 1862.
On Tuesday, fans on Twitter revived Elder and Owens’ chat (Sept. 7). “Slave owners deserved compensation, according to Larry Elder, because they lost their ‘property’ when slavery was abolished. Something is terribly wrong with you if you don’t see a problem with that,” one individual tweeted.
“Here’s a video of Larry Elder arguing for slave owners to be compensated for the loss of their property (Black slaves). Candace Owens, of course, is a part of the conversation,” another added.

First, Candace Owens publishes a video thanking white people for abolishing slavery for them, and then Larry Elder claims that slave owner families are victims of slavery’s abolition.
It’s almost as if their success/money is contingent on pleasing specific people. https://t.co/LSFGTasgPt

Slave owners were legitimately owed reparations because their “property” was seized, according to @larryelder, who is performing some grade A ing.
It doesn’t seem to bother him that the “property” was actually people, our forefathers and mothers.
