There have been lots of debates and arguments about whether Nigeria is truly the giant of Africa or not. Some school of thought believes that Nigeria is the giant in words, and not in action. Another school of thought believes otherwise.

Those who claim that Nigeria is a giant of the black continent seem to have enough evidence to buttress their arguments. According to this group, Nigeria has distinguished herself in many areas deserving the title ‘giant of Africa’.  

Here are the top convincing reasons why Nigeria is truly the foremost African country:


Nigeria is the most populous black race in the world, with an estimated population of over 200 million people. She is the 8th most populous nation in the world after Russia, Pakistan, the USA, Indonesia, China, and Brazil. One-third of her population is young people between the ages of 18 to 35 years.

Africa’s Biggest Economy

Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa, according to a recent report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Her GDP stands around $415.08 billion since October 2019 against South Africa’s $280.36 billion. Her ability to stand against the storm, and reclaim its prime economic pace despite the unfortunate and highly publicized economic meltdown that hit her in 2016 is legendary.

Africa’s Most Educated People

Nigeria boasts of the most educated people in the black continent with an estimated population of over 40 million university graduates, from reputable universities around the world.

First to launch a satellite

Nigeria has a lot of technopreneurs and giants- the likes of Philip Emeagwali. She is honored to be the first country in Africa to launch a satellite into space.

Nigeria is reputed as the country with the highest internet users in Africa. According to a 2016 report, Nigeria has over 97,210,000 internet users. By the year 2020, this figure has increased geometrically.
