Erica Thomas, a Black Georgia Representative, has accused a White man of telling her to go back to where she came from while she was waiting at checkout in a grocery store in Atlanta.
In a teary Facebook Live video, the lawmaker said she was at Publix in Mableton, Cobb County, waiting at a checkout line with her daughter. She admitted to having 15 items in a lane that stipulated 10 items or less, but that she was nine months pregnant and had trouble staying on her feet for long.
According to Erica, a white man, identified as Eric Sparkes, was against Eric being in the quick checkout lane, and viciously abused her verbally. He called a “bitch” and told her to “go back where you came from”.
WSB-TV Atlanta and USA Today, reports that after the incident, Thomas went live on Facebook to explain what happened.
“I decided to go live because I’m very upset because people are getting really out of control with this, with this white privilege stuff. I’m at the grocery and I’m in … the aisle that says ’10 Items or less.’ Yes, I have 15 items, but I’m nine months pregnant and I can’t stand up for long. And this white man comes up to me and says, ‘You lazy sonofab**ch… You need to go back where you came from.’”
The next day, during an interview at the same Publix grocery store with WSB-TV, the man in question returned to confront Erica. He denied telling her to “go back where you come from”.
“I’m a liar about what?” Erica asked Sparkes.
“Everything that happened,” Sparkes said. “Me telling you to ‘Go back where you came from. Did I say that? Is it on video?”
“Are you serious? What did you say to me then,” Erica asked him.
“I called you a lazy (expletive),” Sparkes said to Erica. “That’s the worst thing I said.”
“Yeah, that makes you look better to say that,” Erica replied.
Amazingly, even though Sparkes was the one who had approached Erica during the interview, he was the one who threatened to call the police on Thomas if she didn’t “back off.”
Sparkes in a later interview said that he is of Cuban nationality and a lifelong Democrat, and would never use that term on anyone. He said she had a political end goal in mind and was lying to bring more heat on President Trump who had used the phrase ”go back” on four congresswomen.
“This woman is playing the victim for political purposes because she is a state legislator,” Sparkes said.
“I’m a Democrat and will vote Democrat for the rest of my life, so call me whatever you want to believe. For her political purposes, make it black, white, brown, whatever. It is untrue,” Sparkes said live to WSB-TV.
The police are currently carrying out their investigation on the issue. But while they investigate this issue and many like it, it is important the world sees America for what it is – a clime that is highly racist.
These remarks by the whites of America have been present but have only heightened in response to the body language of President Trump, who is seen on many occasions asking people of color to go back where they come from.
If Blacks in government can face these kinds of unfriendly and disturbing remarks about their race and color, then it is clear that the masses would be facing worse situations from white civilians and law enforcement.
We hope that as time passes, the racial tensions in America would reduce, and people can accept others for their color and who they are.
