Man Who Killed Nicki Minaj’s Father Handed Only One-Year Jail Term

Man Who Killed Nicki Minaj’s Father Handed Only One-Year Jail Term

The man who killed Nicki Minaj’s father in a hit-and-run accident last year was sentenced to one year in prison, which Nicky Minaj’s mother Carol believes is “too lenient” for the perpetrator.

Charles Polevich, 71, was sentenced on Wednesday following the death of Robert Maraj, 64, whom he hit with his Volvo on Long Island in February 2021. Polevich’s driver’s license will also be suspended, and he must pay a $5,000 fine, according to a Nassau County Courthouse representative.

Polevich’s attorney, Marc Gann, told the media after the ruling that his client should have stayed at the scene of the accident based on the information available to avoid the case being treated as a “criminal matter” rather than a civil matter.

“I don’t believe he was at fault for the accident, but he was certainly at fault for his actions after leaving the scene.” “And it’s my strong belief and opinion that he suffered from a medical issue, I believe a heart issue, that caused him to flee the scene of the accident and not be able to recall his conduct or whereabouts thereafter,” Gann added.

Polevich admitted to two felonies: fleeing the scene of the crime without reporting it and tampering with physical evidence.

“He got out of the car, looked at the deceased, got into his car, and made the conscious decision to leave instead of dialing 911 and calling an ambulance for the man,” Nassau County Detective Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said at a news conference shortly after the incident. He returned home and concealed his vehicle.”

In May, Acting State Supreme Court Justice Howard Sturim told Polevich that he would sentence him to “no more than a year in jail,” despite the fact that prosecutors had recommended between one and three years in prison and that Polevich faced up to 11 years in prison.

Carol, Nicki’s mother and Maraj’s wife, was enraged by Sturim’s pledge and reportedly stated that she was “not satisfied” with a one-year prison sentence.

Carol said she was “upset, very, very angry” when she first saw Polevich in court, adding, “I started to shake because it brought back all the memories of that night when I was sitting in the hospital.”

Nicki Minaj responds

Nicki Minaj, 39, stated shortly after losing her father that it was “the most devastating loss” she had ever experienced.

“Though I can’t quite bring myself to discuss my father’s death as of yet; I can say it has been the most devastating loss of my life,” she wrote on her website in May 2021. “I find myself constantly wanting to call him. Especially now that he’s gone. That’s how life is.”

Lawsuit for $150 Million

Carol Polevich, Nicki’s mother, sued Polevich for $150 million in March 2021. Polevich, according to Carol’s attorney Ben Crump, was “not only irresponsible and negligent, but more concerned with fleeing and hiding than getting help.”

Polevich’s attorney, Gann, stated in May that he believed his client had a “medical emergency” immediately following the incident and that he had insurance and a clean driving record.

“Mr. Polevich’s life story is one of helping others,” Gann told Billboard, adding that “there are no allegations of substance use or abuse as causative of his conduct and it is our belief that a medical heart issue contributed to Mr. Polevich’s conduct.” Mr. Polevich is heartbroken over Mr. Maraj’s death.”
